Carex radiata
This is a very ornamental sedge with deep green, fine textured foliage that would make an excellent groundcover for a shady site with plenty of organic matter. Because of its small stature, Eastern Star Sedge can be used as an alternative to turf, and would also make an excellent plant for garden edges. While tolerant of nearly full shade, Carex radiata is not drought tolerant and will need supplemental watering if planted in soil that is too dry, so choose the site carefully. Many songbirds and gamebirds will feed on the seeds, which is the main way this plant propagates in the wild, albeit slowly.
