Carex muskingumensis

An attractive sedge often grown in home landscaping for its foliage, which looks similar to palm fronds, hence its common name. Another common name, Muskingum Sedge, is in reference to the Muskingum River in Ohio where this plant has been found, also referenced by the species epithet.

This plant prefers medium to wet soils and is a fast grower, often forming colonies. For this reason, it would make a great groundcover for a medium-moist shady site, while also providing excellent cover for small birds and mammals. Like all sedges, many types of birds feed on the seeds and many insects use this plant as food. If planted in medium-dry soil, supplemental waterings during extended dry periods will be necessary. This plant would do very well in a rain or water garden as it can tolerate several inches of standing water.
