Carex rosea

This is a very attractive, fine-textured sedge that is highly adaptable to home landscapes. It is pretty tough to distinguish from Eastern Star Sedge (Carex radiata) except that it can tolerate much drier soil and has slightly thinner leaves. The common name and specific epithet refer the color of the seeds, which become “rosy” (redden) with age. Rosy Sedge has several other common names, including Curly Styled Wood Sedge, Golden Star Sedge, and Starry Sedge. This plant remains semi-evergreen year-round. Rosy Sedge is a woodland sedge that is relatively common throughout the Eastern US.

Sedges are often overlooked for their wildlife value. They provide cover, are a food-source for many songbirds, which eat the seeds, and are host plants for many types of insects, including moths and butterflies. In terms of landscaping value, Rosy Sedge would make a good groundcover or green mulch.
