Asclepias tuberosa
Stunning orange blooms in early- to mid-summer attract many types of pollinators to Butterflyweed, which is a host plant to the declining Monarch butterfly. A deep tap root makes this plant drought-tolerant but challenging to transplant, so choose your location carefully. Butterflyweed has a long bloom time and would do well in a butterfly garden or prairie setting. This plant will self-seed but does not spread aggressively and is thus well-suited to small garden spaces.
This plant is deer-resistant but its young shoots, which emerge later in the spring than many other plants, are palatable to rabbits, so it may need protection for that reason. Species epithet refers to the tuberous root from which this plant grows.
