One of over a dozen milkweeds native to the Kentuckiana area, this is a host plant to the declining Monarch Butterfly as well as at least 12 additional native butterfly and moth species. Many pollinators visit this plant, including bees, wasps, and butterflies. Prefers dry, well-drained soils; tolerates moist and poor soil. This is one of the only native clump-forming milkweeds and will spread slowly via rhizomes, but not aggressively. Also one of the most widespread milkweeds in the US.
Species epithet refers to the whorled appearance of its leaves. Another common name is Horsetail Milkweed.
