Rudbeckia fulgida
This phenomenal, clump-forming perennial is closely related to Black Eyed Susans, and is sometimes referred to by that common name. The large and profuse bright yellow-orange blooms first begin appearing in July and are a favorite of butterflies, although it also attracts bees and other pollinating insects. Tough foliage that is generally avoided by mammalian herbivores and its adaptability to a wide variety of growing conditions (everything except standing water) make it an unbeatable plant for cultivation. It is drought tolerant and essentially care-free once established, and doesn’t get too tall and floppy like some other fall-blooming forbs. It is also a host plant to at least 17 caterpillars in the Kentuckiana region and its seeds are sought out by a handful of songbirds.
