Rudbeckia subtomentosa
This is a long-lived perennial, unlike its annual/biennial cousin Rudbeckia hirta, Black Eyed Susan, which has fuzzier leaves and blooms earlier in the summer. This plant prefers full to partial sun but is said to tolerate light shade; because of its wide tolerance of soil and moisture conditions, this would make a great garden plant, as it is also upright and will not spread aggressively.
On top of an almost 6-week bloom time, this plant attracts many pollinators to its easily accessible flowers and is even host to a bee specialist pollinator, Heterosarus rudbeckiae. It is also a substantial caterpillar host plant and supports nearly 20 Lepidoptera in the Southern Indiana/Louisville area. Plant with fall-blooming asters or late summer blooming Liatris spp. for a nice late-season pollinator garden.
The common name is in reference the subtle anise scent to its flowers. Also called Sweet Coneflower.
