Aronia melanocarpa

This striking member of the Rose family is somewhat compact for a shrub and produces edible fruit that is higher in antioxidants than blueberries and cranberries, one of the highest of any temperate fruit. True to its common name, however, the berries are somewhat astringent and more enjoyable after processing (baking, jamming, etc.). I add these to my morning smoothies for an antioxidant boost. While not highly sought out, birds will feed on the berries.

Black Chokeberry is a great shrub for small spaces and provides a rich red fall color (see third photo). It responds well to pruning, which should be done in the spring after flowering. As with similar members of the Rose family, the flowers attract bees and many other pollinators that can access its small flowers. This shrub will sucker to form small colonies, but these are easily pruned. Surround with low-growing spring-blooming perennials to complement its profuse white cymes.

Propagation

Multiple seeds per fruit. Separate and clean seed from fruit and sow in fall. Needs cold stratification.
