A versatile plant for sun or shade, this plant will do well in almost any location in your home landscape. Do not let the many cultivars out there fool you – Red (or Wild) Columbine is the only in its genus native to the US east of the Rockies. Red Columbine is a fast grower and profuse self-seeder, but is still relatively well-behaved in the garden. This plant is deer and rabbit resistant and is also a host plant to at least 11 butterfly and moth species in the Kentuckiana area.

The red flowers and lack of a “perching” flower structure are a clue that this plant is hummingbird-pollinated, but the interesting flowers are also visited by butterflies and bumblebees.
