Hypericum prolificum
An overall astounding shrub for both cultivation and wildlife alike. An almost two-month long bloom time draws in many bees and small flies seeking pollen (these flowers do not produce nectar), and deer and rabbit avoid the foliage due to the presence of the toxic compound hypericin. This handsome plant has a very nice rounded shape, responds well to pruning, and provides valuable cover for wildlife, in addition to being a host plant to at least 17 caterpillars in the Southern Indiana and Louisville area, including the Gray Hairstreak butterfly (above). The foliage and flowers are both quite attractive and the plant is overall highly adaptable, easy-to-grow, and hardy. This would be a good option for a hedge row or privacy screen.
