Verbena stricta
This pretty and somewhat airy perennial is short-lived (3 to 5 years) but is a must-have addition to any butterfly garden, as the nectar-rich flowers are a boon for visiting butterflies. Not only is this prairie plant drought and poor-soil tolerant, but is also non-aggressive and an excellent choice for a smaller garden bed. This plant will reseed easily but not overwhelmingly so, and it is always a nice surprise to find it pop up in unexpected places.
In addition to butterflies, the flowers attract many types of bees, wasps, flies, and skippers, including the specialist pollinator Calliopsis verbenae, the Verbena Bee. This is also somewhat of a significant caterpillar host plant, feeding at least 11 butterfly and moth species in the Kentuckiana region. Many songbirds, including the Cardinal and Field Sparrow, will feed on the seeds. Overall, Hoary Vervain is an easy-to-grow plant that is incredible for wildlife.
Medicinally, Verbena spp. have traditionally played an important role in herbal medicine and folklore around the world prior to modern medicine.
