Symphyotrichum laeve

This stunning aster boasts profuse bright blue-purple blooms in late-summer to mid-fall and will last for many years in cultivation. True to its common name, the stems and leaves are smooth, which is unusual for its genus. The blooms attract many types of bees and pollinators, including Monarchs making their way south to over-wintering sites. This highly versatile garden plant can tolerate many conditions and will usually stay upright through bloom time, another uncommon and valuable characteristic for Symphyotrichum spp.

This plant would be an excellent choice for a butterfly or pollinator garden, including a Monarch Waystation. The foliage hosts around 11 butterfly and moth species native to the Louisville/Southern Indiana area. Several birds, including a few sparrows, will feed on the seeds, and the foliage is occasionally browsed by mammalian herbivores.
