Our native mints are some of the best pollinator plants you can grow – numerous types of bees, beneficial wasps, flies, beetles, and small butterflies are heavily attracted to the pollen and nectar in these summer blooms. Virginia Mountain Mint has particularly strong scented foliage that is repulsive to mammalian herbivores, and would be good for areas frequently visited by deer. The common name “Mountain Mint” is a bit of a misnomer as this plant is not naturally found in mountain habitats, but rather low-lying moist areas.
This plant is a fast grower and can easily overwhelm shorter plants, so it may not be well-suited to smaller garden spaces. Additional common names include Common Mountain Mint and American Mountain Mint.
