Monarda fistulosa
It is difficult to find a plant that is more attractive to pollinators – and Wild Bergamot attracts virtually every kind, from flies to bees, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, and even beetles. I find my plant covered with bees during the entire bloom time, which is long and can last from four to six weeks. This plant can grow up to 4 feet or more, particularly in soil that is rich and moist, and may sometimes flop over under these conditions. The lower leaves of this plant will usually wither or fall off later in the summer, which is normal and not cause for concern. The plant is also susceptible to powdery mildew, which is also normal and doesn’t seem to affect vigor. This plant is said to be more resistant to powdery mildew than others in its genus.
Monarda fistulosa also goes by the common name Bee Balm, as this plant was once made into a salve to treat bee stings. This is a tough, hardy plant that is resistant to mammalian herbivory and is drought tolerant – a must for any native planting.
