Solidago caesia
A delicate and beautiful woodland plant, Blue-stemmed Goldenrod produces subtle but profuse bright yellow flowers mid-fall that appear along the main stems at the axils of the leaves, a relatively unique phenomenon even among its genus (Zigzag Goldenrod is the only other goldenrod that produces axillary flower clusters). Many insects seek pollen and nectar from these blooms, and a handful of songbirds feed on the seeds, including the Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting, and Tree Sparrow. All Solidago spp. are enormously beneficial to wildlife, as goldenrods are host to over 100 Lepidoptera species (butterflies, moths, and skippers), which in turn provide sustenance to songbirds and other animals. Doug Tallamy identifies goldenrods as “Keystone” plants for the plethora of wildlife they support in their local ecosystems.
Blue-stemmed Goldenrod prefers shade to partial sun and can tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions, including poor and dry soil. This plant is easy to grow and would pair well with a woodland aster for a splash of fall color in a dry, shady spot. Also called Wreath Goldenrod.
