Woodland goldenrods are wonderful garden plants and offer a vital pollen and nectar source late in the season when many plants have stopped blooming. Elm-leaved Goldenrod prefers light shade but can adapt to full sun, and its tolerance of a wide range of soil types and moisture levels makes it a valuable garden choice. Elm-leaved Goldenrod is topped by beautiful yellow blooms in late summer to early fall and is not aggressive like a few of its Solidago siblings. Doug Tallamy identifies goldenrods as “Keystone” plants for the plethora of wildlife they support, which include over 100 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars that use goldenrod as their host plant.
Goldenrods are often falsely accused of causing seasonal allergies, which is untrue – goldenrod pollen is heavy and sticky and can only be moved by visiting insects, NOT the wind, so it cannot cause seasonal allergies, which are actually caused by wind-pollinated plants like ragweed.
