Silene virginica
The bright reddish-pink blooms of Silene virginica look just as stunning in-person. This is a must-have for a partially shaded dry area of your garden, and the tubular flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds. Similar to its cousin Royal Catchly (Silene regia), the stems of this plant are somewhat sticky and aid in deterring insects (ants, etc.) from feeding destructively on its vegetative parts. Fire Pink resents too much sun and may decline in such circumstances; several hours of morning sun would be ideal for this plant.
This clump-forming plant is easy to grow and widely tolerant of poor soil conditions, including sand and clay. It is a somewhat short-lived perennial but will reseed successfully in most garden conditions. It can be distinguished from Royal Catchfly (S. regia) by its earlier bloom time and notched flower petals.
