Ruellia humilis
An incredibly adaptable garden plant, Wild Petunia will thrive in almost any sun or soil condition except for standing water or full shade. The common name refers to the plant’s similarity to the cultivated annual, but the two are unrelated (cultivated petunias are actually in the same family as tomatoes, the Nightshade Family, Solanaceae, while Ruellia humilis is in the mostly-tropical family Acanthaceae). This plant is pollinated primarily by bees as well as the occasional moth, and is a host to the Common Buckeye butterfly, Junonia coenia (see third photo above), although it is not a significant butterfly/moth host plant otherwise.
Pair with Old Field Goldenrod for a stunning color combination. This plant is primarily upright but may also sprawl slightly, and would make a good groundcover for that reason. This plant will not tolerate competition from taller plants.
