Verbesina virginica
This plant is one of a few species that exhibits the phenomenon of “frost flowers” – after the first hard frost in late fall, the stems will sometimes split open and the sap will expand and freeze in beautiful white ribbons (see the second photo above). The actual flowers of this plant are also a bright white and bloom well into October, making it a valuable and sought-out nectar source for many types of bees and butterflies, including southern-migrating Monarchs. Plant with Heart-leaved Aster and Elm-leaved Goldenrod for a shady butterfly garden.
In the wild this plant is found along river floodplains and open wooded lowlands; this plant is thus at home in shady wetter areas, but can adapt to partial sun and drier conditions. The main stem of this mostly un-branched perennial is conspicuously winged, hence the common name “White Wingstem.”
