This tough, medium-sized shrub would make a great hedge border or privacy screen, and has also been used in soil/stream bank stabilization. Both short and long-tongued bees visit the flowers for nectar in early summer, and the attractive arching branches make an excellent cover for birds and other wildlife. This plant will spread slightly and can be cut to the ground in winter to rejuvenate once established. Bark on mature branches notoriously peel with age, making it an excellent landscaping choice for year-round interest; the common name is in reference to this ornamental quality. This versatile member of the Rose family is notably tolerant of partly shaded sites, and will grow in nearly any well-drained soil.

Ninebark is host to a significant 29 caterpillar species in the Southern Indiana/Louisville area, including the Glorious Habrosyne (pictured) and the White Spring Moth. Many cultivars of this plant exist in the nursery trade, many with altered leaf color, but this changes the leaf chemistry and likely prohibits caterpillars’ ability to feed on the foliage (avoiding leaf color changes in native cultivars is a good rule no matter the species).
