Pearly Everlasting is found both in the Northeast and the West, but is largely absent from the central Plains States and the Southeast. This plant is quite tolerant of and may even prefer poor, dry soils, and is intolerant of soils without decent drainage. The silvery gray foliage and unusual flowers would make this an interesting garden addition or groundcover. When grown in optimal conditions, this plant may spread somewhat aggressively via stolons, so choose the location carefully.

Pearly Everlasting is the only member of its genus in North America, and there are a few Asian subspecies found in Japan, China, Korea, and other countries. This is found in only a handful of counties in Indiana and Kentucky, but is a host plant to the American Painted Lady (pictured above) and Painted Lady butterflies. It is deer and rabbit resistant. Indigenous Americans had many medicinal uses for this plant, including as a poultice to treat sores; they also smoked and used this plant in teas.
