Clematis virginiana
This fast-growing woody vine is an attractive native alternative to the highly invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis (C. terniflora), which has a similar bloom time and flowers. Wispy, attractive white flowers cover this plant in later summer/fall and provide valuable cover and nesting habitat for birds. Bees, wasps, flies visit the blooms, and mammalian herbivores avoid the toxic foliage.
This plant prefers partial sun and wetter soil but can easily adapt to full sun and average garden conditions. This plant can tolerate a good amount of shade and still flower; in full sun the leaves may yellow. This is a fast growing, twining vine and its soil would benefit from the addition of organic matter (compost). Some may find this plant too aggressive for smaller garden spaces. Without a heavily anchored trellis or other structure, this plant may sprawl on the ground to form a dense groundcover. Plants can be cut back hard (to about 12 inches) in the fall or early spring.
Other common names include Woodbine, White Clematis, and Devil’s Darning Needles, among a few others.
