Symphyotrichum oblongifolium
Stunning bright purple-blue flowers cover this entire plant well into fall after many plants have already gone dormant, up until a hard frost. Unlike many other asters that see foliage decline on the lower stems, the leaves on Aromatic Aster remain mostly intact and attractive throughout the growing season. This plant has a tendency to grow out more than up, giving it a very bushy appearance; the stems even become slightly woody toward the end of the season, but this plant is a true perennial and above-ground growth will die back after a couple hard frosts. Aromatic Aster prefers dry, almost rocky soil, but can tolerate medium moisture as long as there is good drainage. This plant will not tolerate competition from taller plants.
In addition to being a vital late-season nectar and pollen source, especially for migrating Monarchs, this plant is also host to around a dozen moth and butterfly species in the Southern Indiana/Louisville area, including the Silvery Checkerspot (see pictured above). Pair with a late-blooming goldenrod for a mini fall Monarch way-station.
The common name referrals to the scent of the foliage when crushed, as there is a negligible floral scent.
