Yellow Jewelweed is a beautiful native annual, and although it completes its lifecycle in one growing season, it is very easy to grow as long as the seed is sown fresh. It will thus easily reseed in a garden setting under ideal growing conditions. This plant attracts a large number of bumblebees as well as the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, among other pollinators, and is a host plant to many caterpillars in the Kentuckiana area.
The stunning flowers have a long bloom time and give way to seedpods that split open when ripe, ejecting the seed an impressive distance from the parent plant. This plant thrives in wet, almost mucky conditions, but is a little more tolerant of drier soil than its sister, Orange Jewelweed, and is less common.
Both Orange and Yellow Jewelweed have traditionally been used to treat poison ivy rash and pain from stinging nettles; these plants can often be found growing together as they require similar growing conditions. Deer may browse on this foliage. Also called Yellow Touch-Me-Not.
