Euonymus americanus

A wonderful and interesting native alternative to Burning Bush, which shares a genus with Strawberry Bush but is highly invasive, spreading into wild areas and causing much ecological harm. Inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in May-June give way to very showy bumpy red capsules that split open to reveal shockingly bright red seeds that are also an important food source for migrating song-birds, who help distribute the seeds. Fruit matures September-October. This plant thrives in part shade and medium to moist soils and is skinnier than it is tall, making it a good choice for a small shaded area.

Also called “Hearts-a-Bustin.” Both common names refer to the appearance of its fruit. This plant may sprawl in its first couple years of growth but will quickly adopt an upright habit. Regional genotype.
