Asclepias exaltata
A milkweed for shade! Poke Milkweed does well in open or dappled shade and can be very long-lived in cultivation (a decade or longer). While deer-resistant, this plant will need protection from munching rabbits, especially as the tender shoots first emerge in spring.
This is a host plant to the declining monarch butterfly in addition to at least 12 other butterfly and moth species in the Kentuckiana area. Similar to all milkweeds, the blooms are very popular with many different types of pollinators.
