Cephalanthus occidentalis
Unique, globe-shaped flowers cover this plant in early summer and draw many bees and butterflies with its abundant nectar. This relatively large shrub prefers somewhat consistent moisture, and while it can adapt to average-moisture garden conditions, but is best not to plant in a dry site as it would require a lot of supplemental watering. This is one of few shrubs that can handle wet-feet and would thrive in a rain garden or along a small pond. This shrub prefers full to part sun but can tolerate part shade. Many types of waterfowl and other birds eat the seeds and use many parts of this plant in nest construction and for habitat cover. Around two dozen butterfly and moth species use Buttonbush as a host plant, including the Hydrangea Sphinx, Lost Owlet, and Beautiful Wood Nymph. If sited correctly, this fast-growing shrub requires little care once established.
